Dull Knife? Grab a mug

One of the most important tools in your EDC is a knife. But, what’s the point of having a knife if it’s dull? One of the quickest ways to sharpen a knife can be found right inside your kitchen cabinet. Although you might want to invest in a nice sharpening whetstone, just like the one provided in the Alpha Outpost Orion box, we understand not everyone owns one. So, let’s grab a coffee mug and let’s get to sharpening.

Steps:

Get a coffee mug or a cereal bowl (must have a flat bottom)

Once you get your coffee mug or bowl examine the bottom and make sure it has that that rough ring that makes up the base. Keep in mind, you will be sharpening a knife on this so the mug or bowl will end up with a few markings. Since we have a mug, we will be using that, but the same steps apply when using a bowl.

Placement

Hold the mug firmly and place it on a flat sturdy surface. One thing you should ensure is that the mug will not slip. You don’t want a dull knife stabbing your hand.

Sharpening

Place the tip of the knife against the rough edge and slide it from top to bottom. Start with 10 to 15 strokes and keep an angle of 15 to 20 degrees. Repeat this step on the other side of the knife. Feel for sharpness.

I am a certified coffeeholic. At least I am to my friends, & family. Heavy 14oz-16oz mugs (most with a patriotic theme) are found in abundance, in my kitchen cabinets!
I have never heard of using the bottom of one to sharpen my knives. I usually use a whetstone, or a ceramic knife sharpener my late mother gave me, to sharpen my knives. Can’t wait to try this trick next time I need to refresh the edge on my knives. Thanks for sharing. Many blessings to all of you at AO. Stay safe. Happy Holidays.
Sincerely,
Chell
